WHY WE NEED SPACE
Before We Need Space ever had a name, it was the childhood wish of founder, Sara Abbas. These are her words:
As a child, I watched my country be invaded by our neighbors.
I remember being in disbelief. It didn’t make sense. These weren’t strangers. They were my friends from school, my father’s friends from work, my mother’s friends from brunch. They were people we knew. People we had lived alongside.
And yet, suddenly, there was war.
I couldn’t understand how people who had gone to school together, taken dance lessons together, gone to art classes together, celebrated birthdays together and learned together could become divided so completely.
As a child, I began to wonder if the problem was not with the people themselves, but with what was missing at the level of leadership. At the core of it all, I’ve always had great faith in humanity as a whole.
I thought: if we can get along, maybe that’s what’s missing for the other leaders of the world.
So I made a promise to myself. I would bring other leaders of the world together through art, culture, music, history, conversation and the experiences that allow us to see one another not simply as representatives of nations or positions, but as human beings.
That childhood promise became a life’s work.
And eventually, it became We Need Space.
BUILT OVER DECADES TO IMPACT LIFETIMES
For decades this work has been built through relationships, in-person, across borders, cultures, institutions and communities.
It has meant showing up. Standing up for humanity. Traveling to others leading nations. Listening. Making introductions. Building bridges. Cultivating trust. Bringing people into the same room. Keeping promises, over and over. Creating experiences that open doors to conversations that would otherwise never happen.
Over the years, an international network has grown around this work: leaders, royalty, diplomats, cultural figures, entrepreneurs, scholars, philanthropists, celebrities, artists, and people working every day to make a difference in their communities and around the world.
The gatherings, relationships and unexpected connections are real.
What is changing now is the scale.
We Need Space brings decades of experience and relationships into an organization built to expand this work, creating more opportunities for dialogue, cultural exchange, meaningful connection and the preservation of humanity’s shared history.
The foundation has already been laid. Now we are building what comes next.
