Positive Vibes: A Fresh Perspective on “Party Friends”
Today I overheard a gut-wrenching conversation between two men bashing their “Party Friends.” And, although their needs (at that time) seemed to have been met by these friends, they did not seem to speak of them as though they were even real people.
Why do “Party Friends” get such a bad rep? For the very same reason you don’t go to a Sushi restaurant when you’re craving spaghetti, your “party friend” may be offering you a special specific something that only they can provide.
Let’s try to see the true depth of those who may choose not to conform to all 360 degrees of our “friendship” definition. Who knows, your Party Friends may be a massively under-appreciated collection of truly dynamic individuals. Let’s resist the temptation to place outlandish expectations on others and see how that positively affects their lives, as well as our own… In all fairness, your vacuum doesn’t wash the dishes and fluff your pillows, it’s still a great vacuum!
There’s a lot more to be said for being grateful for your friends in general; “party friends” or otherwise, it’s great that you have options in the first place! Imagine only having one genera of friends? The mere thought alone makes me yawn, and worse yet, you may never reap the profusion of benefits that can be gained from being grateful for the plethora of people on your Friend List. Gratitude for one’s own friends improves psychological well-being, and is scientifically proven to increase happiness and decrease probability of depression (as well as its many accompanying side-effects).
According to an expert on the subject, Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., a leading gratitude researcher, “gratitude reduces a multitude of toxic emotions, ranging from envy and resentment to frustration and regret.” It’s not simply all in our heads either, being grateful for and showing gratitude towards one’s own friends can have some significant physical health benefits as well, particularly in stress-related ailment arena. “Feelings of thankfulness have tremendous positive value in helping people cope with daily problems, especially stress,” Emmons says. Less stress equates to less of the “several leading causes of death linked to stress, including heart disease and cancer… (stress) claims responsibility for up to 90% of all doctor visits,” according to Web MD.
I, now, realize that I may only make my appreciation for them apparent every couple years when something has dulled my usually-vibrant glow, but Party Friends always seem to understand that. Now, Party Friends, hear me out:
“Party Friends,” you gorgeous human beings are some of life’s greatest distractions.
